| Tax allowances are concessions by HM Revenue & Customs, which can be used to reduce a person's taxable income. The main allowance for UK taxpayers is the 'personal allowance', which is an amount of income that is tax free. In the tax year 2006-2007 the personal allowances are #5,035 for people under 65, rising to a higher figure at the age of 65 and again at 75. Other allowances include the Married Couple's Allowance (available to couples where one person is 65 or over) and the Blind Person's Allowance.
