Financial Glossary what is alpha-transfer

Alpha Transfer

Returns come from two sources: market returns, or beta, and active manager returns, or alpha. Managers can use derivatives to eliminate market returns from their investments and capture the pure active return, i.e. separating the alpha from the beta. Once separated, the alpha from one asset class can be transferred to other asset classes. If transferred to a cash benchmark, this creates an absolute return product.
