Financial Glossary what is arithmetic-mean

Arithmetic Mean

The correct term for what most people call the 'average'. Often shortened to 'mean'. Calculated by adding up a series of values and dividing the total by the number of values. For example, 1+2+3+4+5+6+7=28. The mean is 28 divided by 7, which equals 4. The mean is in contrast to the mode and median, which are other measures of central tendency.
