Financial Glossary what is at-best

At Best

An 'at best' order is an order given by a client to a broker where no particular instruction is given on the price. Also referred to as a 'market' order. So, an instruction to 'buy 500 shares in company X at best' means that the broker will complete the purchase at the best price available at the time, and the client cannot be sure what that price is going to be. In contrast when a client places a limit order he actually dictates the price at which he is willing to buy or sell, and the broker can only make a deal within the limit given.
