Financial Glossary what is public-limited-company

Public Limited Company

A company registered as a public company that has an unlimited number of shareholders and can offer its shares to the public. Most UK companies are incorporated as limited companies. Some grow to the point where they want to expand their shareholder base and have the capacity to raise additional capital. While many plcs are listed on a stock exchange, it is not essential to float the company to gain plc status.
